About IES

'Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think'
Albert Einstein

Developing and inspiring a love of learning is what we at IES believe is one of the most important attributes to success.  Children and young people who face difficulties in  education are often disillusioned with the whole process and many suffer from acute self-esteem issues.  IES aims to re-ignite the passion for independent inquiry and discovery within children and young people whilst caring for their wellbeing and mental health.

A 'one size fits all' approach does not feature at IES.  Independent, individual, personalised and holistic services are offered, where experiential multi-sensory learning is key.

Services

A range of services can be provided.  If you require something that is not listed below, please do get in touch to discuss your requirements

Dyslexia Diagnostic Assessment

Diagnostic assessments can take place at your child's home or school and involve a selection of PATOSS approved psychometric tests as well as observation of behaviour,  teacher and parent questionnaires. All diagnostic assessments follow the SASC guidelines which is the formal regulatory body for diagnostic reports in the UK:   https://www.sasc.org.uk/.  These reports are internationally recognised and any subsequent diagnosis will be accepted across state, independent and international schools.

Assessments are rigorous, holistic and take into account many different factors to make an overall judgement on whether a child or young person is experiencing  a specific literacy difficulty. Full assessments include recommendations for specific future support and follow-up meetings can be arranged with school staff to discuss the findings so that provision can be personalised and actioned within the school setting.

Exam Access Arrangements

Examination access arrangements can be conducted from the end of year 9 for GCSE examinations or year 12 for A-Level examinations.  Access arrangement assessments do not give a diagnosis and can only be used by the SENCO of the school to apply for access arrangements - e.g. extra time, scribes, readers etc.

A full picture of need and evidence of use will need to be gathered by the SENCO as well as the use of the test results which are submitted to the exam board and regulatory body, JCQ.

Examination access arrangements can also be sought for the ISEB pre-test and Common Entrance Examinations.  Many Independent Senior Schools will require evidence to allow for examination concessions and this will need to be conducted by a qualified assessor.

Advocacy

Having an independent advocate for your child during school review meetings can be a powerful tool to ensure that your child's needs are being met and that inclusive provision continues to be delivered within the classroom.  School progress reviews, EHCP annual reviews or parent/teacher and SENCO consultations all can be attended by IES.

Observations

An independent observation can be arranged within the class setting or at home to give further insight into the challenges that your child maybe facing on a day-to-day basis and will supplement any written assessments.  Recommendations for support and adaptions to the learning environment are provided.

Tuition that is fun, engaging and truly adaptive to the child can be provided on an hourly basis.  This can be a specific cumulative, multi-sensory course for children experiencing specific literacy difficulties (dyslexia) or any primary subjects and secondary maths, English and  science up to GCSE is offered.
